Working as a welder in Spain: paperwork, contract and mobilization

The shortage of homologated welders in Spain opens real opportunities, above all in the refining and petrochemical hubs. But getting on site without your paperwork in order is a dead end: the inspector keeps you out and the company risks a fine. This is the legal route.

What you need before you move

  • UNE-EN ISO 9606 homologation in force, ideally in more than one process (141 TIG and 111 stick are the most requested).
  • PRL training under the metal-sector agreement: working at heights, confined spaces and electrical risk.
  • A valid occupational medical check certifying fitness for the role.
  • Identity and work documents: DNI/NIE and, for non-EU workers, a work authorization.
  • A contract under the applicable metal-sector agreement before you start.

Common hiring routes

  1. Direct contract with a Spanish company —industry or maintainer— with Social Security registration.
  2. Assignment through a specialized staffing company that places you across different shutdowns.
  3. Intra-EU posting (A1 form) if you arrive contracted from another EU country.

Typical pay and conditions

A UNE-EN ISO 9606 6G welder on an industrial site in Spain sits, depending on the agreement, project and complexity, in a band that shutdown overtime can push well up. In a turnaround, stacked hours fatten the paycheck considerably, and lodging and travel are usually on the company.

What to steer clear of

Verbal promises, unsigned contracts, firms that neither register you nor cover housing, and any arrangement to work off the books. If something sounds too easy, it is usually illegal.
